
HDPE and nylon are both plastics, both are knitted into netting, and both sound similar on a quote — but they fail outdoors in very different ways. For agricultural, construction and shade netting, the choice usually comes down to one question: how long does it have to sit in the sun?
HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is the workhorse of outdoor netting — tough, cheap, and when UV-stabilized, able to hold its strength for years in full sun. Nylon is stronger for its weight and stretches more, which is why it dominates fishing line, rope and sports netting. But nylon has a weakness that matters outdoors: it absorbs water and degrades under UV much faster than stabilized HDPE.
Nylon loses strength noticeably in sunlight unless heavily treated, and it absorbs moisture — a wet nylon net is heavier and its fibres swell and weaken over repeated wet-dry cycles. HDPE is naturally hydrophobic and, with the UV stabilizer mixed into the yarn, holds up outdoors for years. Nylon’s higher stretch is an advantage where a net must absorb shock — a landing net or a ball-impact net — because it gives and recovers. HDPE has less stretch but more long-term stability: it does not sag permanently the way a stretched nylon net does. For a fixed installation that must stay taut for years, that stability matters more than raw strength.

Nylon earns its keep where stretch and shock recovery are the point, not where the net has to survive season after season outdoors.
