Both are plastics, both come in nets, and both sound the same on a quote — but HDPE and polypropylene lead very different outdoor lives. One is the material serious netting is made from; the other degrades years earlier. Here is how to tell them apart and when each is the right call.
Ask a supplier what their net is made from and "polyethylene" and "polypropylene" blur into one word. They are not the same resin, and the difference is the single biggest reason two nets that look identical can have very different service lives. This is the comparison we walk buyers through when they are choosing between a cheap net and one that lasts.
HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is a tough, tightly-packed polymer with excellent resistance to sunlight when UV-stabilized. It is the resin almost all agricultural and construction netting is knitted from. Polypropylene (PP) is lighter and cheaper, and it is strong in the short term — but it is naturally far more vulnerable to UV, so it embrittles and breaks down much faster outdoors. The two are cousins, but only one is built for years in the sun.
Outdoors, the net's whole job is to sit in the sun, so UV resistance decides its life. A UV-stabilized HDPE net typically serves 5–8 years. Polypropylene, even stabilized, usually lasts 2–4 years before the yarn loses strength and snaps under tension. That is the core of the difference: for the same money spent twice replacing a PP net, you could have bought one HDPE net that was still standing. The stabilizer matters too — both resins need it mixed into the yarn, not sprayed on — but HDPE starts from a much higher baseline.
Both resins knit into strong netting, but they behave differently under load. HDPE has a little give and a high resistance to tearing and abrasion, so it absorbs wind and impact rather than snapping. PP is stiffer and less forgiving — it holds a shape well, which suits some uses, but it is more prone to splitting when a tear starts. For anything that takes wind or repeated handling, HDPE's toughness wins.
Polypropylene is lighter per unit strength and cheaper per kilogram, which is why it dominates short-life, disposable uses — packaging, temporary cover, one-season wraps. HDPE costs slightly more up front, but its longer outdoor life makes it the cheaper net per season of use. When a net has to survive, not just exist, the higher price is the better deal.

The pattern is clear: HDPE is the resin for anything that stays outside and has to last — shade, bird, hail, insect and windbreak net all knit from it. PP is for jobs where the net is thrown away at the end of the season and longevity was never the point.
