A knitted shade sail is deliberately not waterproof — it lets rain and air through. Only some sites genuinely need a waterproof sail, and it comes with a heat and wind penalty. Here is how to choose the right one for your job.
Ask for a "waterproof shade sail" and you're really asking one of two very different questions: "will it keep the sun off?" or "will it keep the rain out?" The two answers come from two different materials, and picking the wrong one either leaves you wet or turns your patio into a greenhouse. As a factory that knits shade sails every week, we usually end up talking customers out of waterproofing they don't actually need.
A standard shade sail is knitted HDPE — the same high-density polyethylene yarn we use for agricultural shade net, woven into an open knit. By design, water and air pass straight through the gaps. That openness is the whole point: it blocks 80–95% of UV and cuts heat, yet the breeze still moves through so the space underneath stays cool instead of baking.
A waterproof shade sail is that same knit with a solid film laminated or coated onto one face — usually a PVC or polyethylene membrane. Now nothing passes through: not rain, not air, and not the heat the fabric itself would otherwise release. You get a dry patch in a shower, and you give up almost all of the cooling benefit.
For the great majority of outdoor shade — patios, decks, carports, playgrounds, pool areas — a breathable knitted sail is the better product. It runs cooler underneath, handles wind better (wind loads pass through the mesh instead of pulling on every anchor), and it's lighter and cheaper to install. If your aim is shade in a hot climate, breathable is almost always correct.
Reach for a waterproof sail when you want to keep a space dry, not just shaded: an outdoor dining area that must stay open in light rain, a bar counter, equipment storage, or a canopy over stock you can't get wet. In those cases the waterproofing earns its keep — but install it with a real slope, because a flat waterproof sail becomes a pond.
There are two common ways to make a shade sail waterproof. A laminate bonds a film to the knit, giving a smooth, fully sealed face that's easy to wipe clean. A coating (usually PVC) is applied over the surface and is tougher against abrasion but heavier and stiffer. Both add weight and cost, and both should be factory-sealed at the seams — a stitch hole through a waterproof face is a slow leak.

The pattern is consistent: waterproofing pushes the GSM up by a third and blocks more light, but the sealed surface traps heat. On a still 35°C afternoon, the air under a breathable sail is noticeably cooler than under a waterproof one — that's the trade you make.
A waterproof sail must be pitched — a 15–20° slope so water runs to the low corner instead of pooling. Pooled water is heavy (a 3 × 3 m sail holding a few centimetres of water carries dozens of kilograms) and will stretch and eventually tear the fabric or the anchor. Our waterproof sails ship with reinforced edge webbing and a marked low-corner so the installer knows which way to pitch it. For the tension and anchor spacing, the same rules as any shade sail installation apply — leave 10–15% for tension.
If the question is "will it keep the sun off my people?" — buy breathable knitted HDPE shade sail. If the question is "will it keep the rain off my stock?" — buy waterproof and pitch it. And if you want one sail that does both perfectly, be honest: that product doesn't exist, and the closest thing is a breathable sail over the seating plus a waterproof one over the equipment.
