A privacy screen only works if it stays put. The good news: with pre-sewn eyelets and cable ties, attaching one to a fence or balcony takes minutes and no tools. The mistakes — over-tightening and cutting the edge — are easy to avoid once you know why they matter.

A privacy screen is a fast way to turn an exposed balcony or overlooked fence into a private, sheltered spot — and its value goes well beyond hiding you from the neighbours. Done right, a good screen also cuts wind, dust and UV. But it only earns its keep if it’s fixed properly: a screen that flaps or tears out in the first storm is money down the drain. Here is the no-drill installation method.
Privacy screen goes onto almost anything vertical: a balcony railing, an existing fence, an iron grid or gate, a pergola post or a stair railing. The surface doesn’t matter much — what matters is that you have enough fixing points to spread the load. A long run of railing gives you plenty; a single post does not.
Most privacy screens come with metal eyelets pre-sewn along the top and bottom edges, usually every 30–50 cm. Installation is simply threading a cable tie through each eyelet and around the railing or fence bar, then pulling it snug. No screws, no drilling, no tools beyond your hands.
Use the eyelets you have, not just the corners. A screen fixed only at its four corners sags in the middle and catches the wind like a loose sail; a screen fixed at every eyelet stays flat and quiet. Typical hardware — eyelets with a 1 cm inner diameter and cable ties around 5 × 250 mm with a 22 kg tensile load — is more than enough for a well-spaced run.

A privacy screen is, in engineering terms, a small sail. The moment the wind gets behind it, the whole panel loads up on its fixings. That’s why spacing matters more than the material: fix at every eyelet, keep the screen taut, and in a windy spot add extra ties between the sewn eyelets. A screen that blocks 90–95% of the wind is doing its job — but only if it’s anchored well enough to take that wind and hand it back to the railing instead of flapping loose.
Cable ties are the fast default; cord or rope laced through the eyelets is the neat alternative for a softer look or when you’ll be removing the screen seasonally; tension wire is the heavy-duty choice for long runs and high wind. For most balconies and fences, ties or cord are all you need — reserve wire for exposed, permanent installations.
The real payoff of a well-fitted screen is comfort. A dense HDPE privacy screen blocks 90–95% of visibility and the same share of UV, while acting as a wind deflector that turns a gusty balcony into a sheltered seat. That’s a fence upgrade and a microclimate in one. Our knitted HDPE privacy screen is made to this spec — reinforced edges, metal eyelets and UV-stabilised so it keeps its colour and strength for seasons, not weeks.

| Cable ties | Good, cheap | Most railings and fences |
| Wire | Best, permanent | High-wind sites |
| Cord / rope | Light | Temporary, light screens |
Yes. Most screens have pre-sewn metal eyelets; you thread a cable tie through each eyelet and around the railing or fence bar, then pull it snug. No screws or tools are needed.
No. The top and bottom edges are reinforced with a solid band that anchors the eyelets. Cutting it removes that reinforcement and the raw ends will fray and tear.
Use the eyelets as they come — usually every 30–50 cm along the top and bottom — and don’t fix only at the corners. Fixing at every eyelet keeps the screen flat and stops it catching the wind.
Yes. A dense HDPE screen blocks around 90–95% of wind and UV, acting as a wind deflector as well as a privacy barrier — provided it’s fixed taut enough to take the load.
Fix at every eyelet, pull the ties snug but not tight, and never cut the reinforced edge. Tell us your fence or balcony and we’ll quote the right privacy screen.
