Safety netting over a swimming pool or farm pond is not the same as agricultural shade net or bird net — it is a load-bearing safety product. The mesh has to stop a child or animal from falling through, the material has to survive years in chlorinated or direct sun conditions, and the installation has to hold under the load of a person landing on it. Getting any of those three wrong is not a product problem — it is a liability problem.
Agricultural netting is designed to shade, exclude or shelter. Safety netting is designed to arrest a fall — which means it needs consistent, tight mesh with no gaps wide enough for a head or limb, sufficient tear resistance to absorb and distribute the load, and long-term UV stability so it does not embrittlement over the seasons it spends in full sun. A net that looks similar in a photo can fail in ways that agricultural net never would.
For pool and pond safety, the mesh must not allow a 100 mm sphere to pass through — that is the standard test threshold in most safety regulations. For residential pools, a 25–30 mm mesh aperture is common; for commercial and public pools, or where the net must stop small animals as well as children, go to 19–25 mm. A tighter mesh than necessary is always better than one that is borderline — the cost difference is small and the margin of safety is real.
UV-stabilized HDPE is the right material for pool and pond safety netting. It does not rot in chlorinated water (unlike some natural fibres), it holds its strength under long-term UV exposure, and it has enough give to absorb a fall without snapping. A safety net only works if it is anchored at every point and tensioned so a load cannot push through the mesh. Run a perimeter cable around the pool or pond edge, fix the net to it at every eyelet, and anchor the corners with the strongest fixings. Leave enough slack so the net can absorb a load — a net that is guitar-string tight has no give and transfers the full impact force to the anchor points. The tension should be such that a person landing on the net displaces it 150–300 mm without touching the water or the ground beneath.

A safety net should be inspected at the start of each season: check every anchor point, every selvedge seam, and run a hand over the mesh to feel for thin spots or UV degradation. A net that has been up for three or more seasons without inspection is a risk — UV embrittlement is invisible until the net tears under load. Replace any net that shows signs of fibre degradation, UV chalking or thinning at the selvedge.
