Insect netting for vegetable gardens is the simplest pest control there is: a physical barrier between the crop and the insect, with no spray schedule and no residue. But it only works when three decisions are made correctly — the mesh has to match the pest, the setup has to match the crop, and somebody has to think about pollination before the flowers open. Get those right and a net costing cents per square meter protects a bed for seasons. Here is how we advise growers to spec it, from market gardens to commercial rows.
Mesh size is the whole game. Too coarse and the pest walks through; too fine and you pay for airflow and shading you did not need. Start from the smallest pest you actually need to stop:

One honest caveat: no mesh stops everything. Very fine meshes that block whitefly also cut airflow noticeably, and in humid climates that trades an insect problem for a fungal one. Buyers often assume heavier mesh stops more insects. It does not — the aperture decides what gets in. GSM decides how long the net survives handling. Lightweight 30–50 gsm butterfly netting drapes directly over crops and suits gentle, seasonal use; 50–70 gsm is the all-round garden weight; 90–110 gsm earns its keep on commercial rows where the net is dragged, folded and re-laid every week. A mid-weight net replaced every second season costs more than a heavier net used for five — our netting is rated for 3–10 years of outdoor use depending on weight and handling.
Floating drape — laying the net directly on the crop — works for sturdy plants that tolerate contact: brassicas, carrots, potatoes, beans. Leave slack for growth; a taut drape strangles the bed in a month. Hoops or frames are the right call for anything the mesh would rub or crush: lettuce, strawberries, young transplants, and tall crops like tomatoes. Rubbing is not just cosmetic — a pest can lay eggs through mesh that touches the leaf.
Whichever setup you choose, the edges decide whether it works. Insects do not fly over a net; they walk under it. Bury the edges 10–15 cm in soil, or weight them with boards, sandbags or soil mounded along every side — and check the corners after wind. A perfectly specced net with one lifted corner is an insect hotel with a roof.
A net that stops pests also stops bees. Whether that matters depends entirely on the crop. Leafy greens, brassicas, carrots and root crops need no pollination at all — keep them covered the whole season. Tomatoes and peppers set fruit without insect visitors, so they can stay covered too. But cucurbits — cucumbers, squash, melons, zucchini — must be pollinated by insects. Cover them early while they grow, then remove the net when the first flowers open, or hand-pollinate under the net. Decide this before you cover, not when you find a month of flowers and no fruit.
Netting is not always the right tool, and pretending otherwise wastes money. Netting wins when the pest arrives predictably from outside — butterflies, moths, beetles, birds — and when the crop is high-value or eaten raw, so residue matters. It also wins on cost over time: one net, reused for years, against spray after spray. Spraying still wins against pests already in the soil, against disease vectors too small for practical mesh, and over large areas where covering is impractical. Many commercial growers run both: netting as the first line, targeted treatment only when something gets through. The point of the net is not purity — it is that most seasons, nothing gets through.
Install the net at sowing or transplanting — before the pests arrive, not after you see damage. Netting placed over an already-infested bed seals the problem in. Through the season, lift an edge weekly to check the undersides of leaves. At the end of the season, hose the net off, dry it fully, and store it out of sunlight; UV-stabilized HDPE lasts for years, but it ages fastest crumpled damp in a sunny corner.
